Fox Den is going to be publishing the GN of to Kill a Dragon this fall so I sat down and whipped up a new cover for the collected version. Did it as a watercolor since my computer was down for 1/2 the week. Hoping to premier it at APE 2015 this year.

Here's the final version. ^.^

Well, for good or for ill - We've made the jump, as it were. Yesterday, Baron put in his "two-week" notice at work. I put that in quotes because it's actually longer than 2 weeks. He wanted to hang around long enough for one of the other co-workers to get back from Vacation. We both are looking forward to this and are terrified all at the same time. But when it looks like Baron can pull more money in via commissions that he can from the day job - it's time to make the jump.

The biggest scare? My medical which just keeps piling up. I mean we've known Baron wanted to make this jump for some time, Murphy's Law, it just so happens to occur just as all my medical appoints are coming around. Insurance helps but ... Yauzers! One full head dental X-ray set ($90.00 out of pocket), and Optometry in the same week. lol.

I ended up dropping $300.00 for new lenses today because my eyes are changing focus points rapidly. According to the doctor, I need two sets of glasses now, progressive bi-focals for general use/driving and desk glasses. The amount I just paid were for the progressives. I'll be getting a uber cheap set of desk glasses via Online, since they don't have to be so rugged with extra coatings for glare and such.

Good news is that my allergies and general sickness are keeping in check this year so far. Yes, I'm feeling this allergy season (it's a whopper), but am holding it together better than previous years. Because of that I'm getting sick and taking downtime less and less. It is a serious improvement in the long-run and I am very happy for it.

I, myself have been doing a lot of small, but ever present, business things to keep them off Baron's desk so he can just work on art. So far it's working out. Accounting, website work, paperwork and filings, business to business communications, ect. Oh, and I'm still working on my own stuff too, just not direct commissions atm. If you wanna check out my WIPs for my new project, they are slowly becoming available over on Patreon if you wanna check them out, for a small fee.

I'm currently setting up for printing 'To Kill a Dragon' as floppies. I'll be holding off printing them until after the last issue is available digitally from ComiXology. And when will that be, you ask? I have no freak'n clue. As it is, all four will probably be posted up on Comics Plus before ComiXology at this rate. Comics Plus, however will be posting #1 on the 6th and each issue, once per week, following. I really like working with the Comics Plus guys so I was happy to get 'To Kill a Dragon' up there too. Just took a bit longer since they are more hands on than ComiXology.

I also plan on having an update to the SM-EW Comic Easel <3 S2member plugin for WordPress next week. WordPress rolled out a new version last week, and I'm a little behind in testing it for compatibility. Should be no issues, but it's gotta get done. Also talked about about admin updating on the Radio Site (since that is way too big/complex for Elin/Joe/Will to deal with). Once I get a couple more things worked out on SM-EW, I'll be reworking their site to get it more mobile-friendly, and updating programming to take advantage of newer coding. They will still be responsible for post updates, not I. It will take a while to get to this however, but I should be on it by mid-year if all goes well.

One thing I have discovered about myself recently, is there is three of me. You know how [livejournal.com profile] haikujaguar describes herself as three separate individuals (Artist Jaguar, Business Jaguar, and Marketer Jaguar) when it comes to the mental states you have to be in to accomplish different jobs? Well, it seems I have three of my own, Artist Smudge, Business Smudge, and Programmer Smudge. The trouble is, Artist Smudge and Programmer Smudge ... hate each other's guts with an unbridled passion and will not exist in the same room at the same time. With Programmer Smudge being much more in-your-face aggressive (when it comes to programming, I seem to have anger-management issues), poor Artist Smudge gets kicked to the curb. You so do not want to be around me when I'm programming. Needless to say, I'm having to re-juggle my schedule to make sure I can have Art Days and Programmer Days and neither the twain will meet. Fortunately, Business Smudge co-habitats with both so at lest I can balance that a little bit better.

Funny how the brain works.

Anyways - I think that's about everything for me rambling. Wish us luck!

I'm currently setting up the updates for 'To Kill a Dragon' on SM-EW. Unfortunately, due to the drip-feed, I'm going to have to hand post update announcements.

Basically, if I currently let the WordPress automation do it, it will post announcements that the subscriber page is live, but leave the public page hanging. I'd rather announce the Public page and let the Subscriber page be. Kind of annoying, but deal-able. In the future I'll probably set up some sort of automation for it but that's more coding that I'd... well.... rather put off.

Right now, I'm setup to announce the pages in Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr.

Is there anyone watching LJ here that would prefer to get announcements here as well?

It'd be a little extra work, but not that big of a deal. I'll be asking this same question in other outlets as well, so if you watch me else were too and would rather have me post about it there instead, chime up!

We are so happy to announce that 'To Kill a Dragon' is now available on on http://www.smudgemarks-engelwerks.com! It will be posting 3 days a week from now until the end of the 4 issue miniseries. While you can read the entire story for free, we also are offering a subscription version (for 99¢ a month via PayPal) that gets you +1 week access and larger/higher definition images of the pages and no adds.

We hope you all enjoy!

Nadine is on a MISSION! And poor Betsy is being treated like a motorcycle.

I'm really pleased on how this cover came out as a whole. Issue 4 is nearly in the can and I hope to have it uploaded to various websites by Friday. I'll also be posting on SMEW mostly to test out the new drip-feed plugin that I wrote. Posting to ComiXology is coming along. They should have issue two available anytime now and I just got the notice that issue three will be available soon as well. I've also entered talks with iVerse about adding it to Comics Plus and their Library Service program. Hopefully good things will come of that but nothing official as of yet.

Hope you all enjoy!

Hello all! Still busy working away on 'To Kill a Dragon', but I wanted to post a little update of where I currently stand. Just finished another color page. That means I have 7 more pages to go. With luck, I'll have everything done by the second week of February.

Unfortunately, I have a little bad news for those waiting for 'To Kill a Dragon' on ComiXology. After sitting in the cue for months, they have finally rejected issue 2. Mostly due to "need's proofing/has typos" and "images are too low quality/aliased". Okay, I freely admit my spelling is not the best in the world. It gets "creative" at times. But that's why I pass it off to three different people to proofread. Apparently something slipped though anyways. So, when I get a chance I'll go back though the files and see what went wrong and fix it. At least for ComiXology purposes, there is going to be an even longer delay between issues. But I wanted to let folks know what's going on there.

I've also been wanting to upload the pages on SmudgeMarks & EngelWerks, but my heads been so full of just getting the coloring done for the last issue, that keeps getting pushed back. Again, I'm sorry for the delay of that.

A lot of the hangups are cementing in my mind to have a project competed *before* going live with it. Too many delays and interruptions that I cannot seem to recover from, so the best workaround is to have it in the can before hand. At least I'm coming to grips with it now and not with a much bigger project.

Anyways - The last issue of 'To Kill a Dragon' is now looking to come out the first or second week in February. I really hope you enjoy it!

Well, yeah. It was bound to happen.

I, Smudge, have fallen behind in my work schedule again. Nothing bad, really. Just over booked myself then the holidays started. Will post a couple of sketches and such on Friday to the various sites that host but the last issue (which will be oversize) will hopefully be posted at the beginning of January.

I also completely face-planted on NaNoWriMo this year. Part of the issue there is that I was assuming I would have ‘To Kill a Dragon’ done by the beginning of November. BWAHAHAHA, silly me. So, yeah. I’ll get back to that once the comic is done.

Anyways, just wanted to give you all a heads up on things happening here.

Sorry things have been quite here lately. Mostly it’s due to having our noses to the grindstone.

Baron’s been working hard getting commissions done while getting work together for FC next year. Will post new stuff on that, hopefully, Monday.

As for me, Smudge, Fox Den and I have got ‘the Keeper’s Warrior’ edits in the can and hope to have the proof copy from the printer any day now. ePub version will also be released at the same time so you have your choice of digital or dead trees. Oh, and I was able to include all the art in the digital version too. It was a pain, but I think it will be well worth it in the long run.

To ‘Kill a Dragon’ is still chugging along. I’m in talks with MadeFire, a comic app, to have it posted there.

And last but not least, I’m participating in NaNoWriMo this year. Mostly to try and kick me outta my mental block when it comes to writing. This past few years have not been good to me stress wise and it means that my writing creative juices are not only not flowing, but acting like molasses… in Montana … during winter. And before you ask, ‘To Kill a Dragon’, story-wise, has been sitting on my desk complete for nearly ten years. But with luck, and a little nudge, now that the worst of the stress is off me, I can get things not only going again, but completed.

I’ve decided this year, I’m going to get Dis’ tale done. Right now, it’s under the working title of ‘the Inn of the Cat’, but I am hoping to find something better. After all, the current title, while descriptive, is pretty dang common. Wish me luck!

the Inn of the Cat

DisLoungingAround

Dis was a wanderer, but not by choice. All he wants is a place to call home. And he finally thought he’d found it, in a small inn run by Edio within the bustling trade city of Daleport. Yet, politics, the coming of a new lordship for the city and fear are threaten to, yet again, force him to flee. After all, it’s hard to be a magical being in a city that faces any magic with torches and pitch-forks.

Getting close to releasing issue #3 of ‘To Kill a Dragon’. Here’s the cover image to prove it. ^.^

Sorry I’ve been so quite as of late. Usually when I drop off it’s because I’m either dealing with RL drama, or have my nose to the grindstone. This time, happily, it’s been the latter, not the former. Not only have I been working on getting ‘To Kill a Dragon’ out the door, but I’ve been doing a lot of work behind the scenes here setting up a new eStore and programing needed plugins.

The program work is nearly done. As soon as it is, I’ll be posting ‘To Kill a Dragon’ at SmudgeMarks & EngelWerks as well as a test of our new subscription model for comics, stories, and podcasts.

I’ve also been keeping busy domestic side as well. Been on a slow rampage of house cleaning/organization/getting-rid-of-crap since the emergence room visit a month ago. A lot of this is my vain attempt to get the house a little less allergen friendly. My long standing dream at this point is to get it in shape enough for Roombas to be able work. Yeah, probably never happening, but I can give it the collage “GO”.

Back to the grindstone for me – Issue three won’t letter itself.

smudgedragon: watercolor of dragon cleaning its magic pearl (Spit & Polish)
After getting both issue 1 and issue 2 of 'To Kill a Dragon' done, I have absolutely no clue how good, bad or indifferent it's doing. I am pretty happy with how it's turning out. With only four issues (at 13 pages a pop) it's at least being very good for getting me comfortable with doing a full color title. Practice, after all does make prefect.

But this begs the question - Has anyone reading this actually read the book? If so, what do you think of it?

While Baron busies himself with commissions, I’ve been working hard on getting the next issue of “To Kill a Dragon” ready for posting on Crunchyroll. I have all the pages colored, and lettered. Now it’s just proofing my lettering and get the cover/chapter illustration done. I really hope everyone’s been enjoying the series so far.

To wet your appetite, here’s a couple of the colored, lettered pages. ^.^
