Housing woes; appently ALL cats hate me.
Nov. 3rd, 2005 02:05 pmSo, I (on behalf of
rindis & Baron) have been doing house hunting all week. They are raising our rent on our current place to just outside our ability to pay, & I’m taking it as “the sign” to find a new place. At the moment we’re looking at getting a 3-bedroom place and taking on a new roommate, Dave, whom we’ve know for years and Baron had actually roomed with before. This, hopefully, will cut the cost for everyone involved to something a little more livable in the Valley.
What we’re looking for, unfortunately, sounds like a Silicon Valley pipe-dream; 3+BR/1.5+ bath, Quite non-trashy neighborhood, within commute distance for
rindis (he goes all the way up into the city everyday for work via train), plenty of parking, on-site laundry, garage and/or extra family room preferred, located in the west valley (Cupertino, Santa Clara, Sunny Vale, Mountain Veiw ect.) for under $1700.00 a month.
Yes, I must be smoking something. Most 3BR houses (which is what really fits the bill) start renting at $2100.00 a month around here. We desperately need the extra room for BackBreaker. A 3BR doesn’t actually fit for us either, we’d need a four or even five BR/Den since Dave has his own full-time business as well.
So far, out of like some 50 places I’ve checked with so far, we have a grand total of one that might fit the bill. We’ve got an appointment to view it tomorrow (Friday), and a chance to grill the owner about the place.
Problem? Yes. It’s in Los Gatos, right on the boarder between it and San Jose City limits. Because of the two businesses, we’d have to get new business licenses to operate within Los Gatos. While I did the house hunting, I sicked Dave on finding out how much it would be and the other legalities of it.
Dave: "It turns out we are considered PROFESSIONALS. Each professional must pay two hundred dollars per year, plus fifteen dollars per year for each support staff member. That means I'd pay them two hundred a year and you guys would pay them four hundred fifteen a year. Can you tell they're thinking attorneys and business consultants?
In addition we'd have to pay a one-time home occupancy fee, which is an additional one hundred twenty-five dollars per business. So, then, moving to Los Gatos means I'd be paying the town three hundred twenty-five dollars and you guys would be paying the town five hundred forty dollars.
I nearly had a coronary."

I can’t win, can I....
