I'm still confused... and I think I might not have conveyed myself clearly. When I said that the backgrounds looked to be 3D, I wasn't referring to them being done in CGI - I meant that they were rendered in the old fashion way: by hand. With traditional media, like paint. (Although, as you said, this was painted by computer.) They have the appearance of being three dimensional instead of being flat like a two dimensional cartoon. This pretty much looks like any non-CGI animated feature, except for the Anime influence.

In short, I'm still not certain as to what's different or groundbreaking here. I can't see it. What am I supposed to be looking for? What am I missing?
