Farewell Stage6, Hello Blip.tv & Veoh
Feb. 27th, 2008 09:56 amWell, crud.
2 days ago, Stage6 suddenly announced that they were shutting down. As someone who has films hosted there, I was really bummed. For high quality, high definition video it was the best site I had ever worked with and they were a driving force in the internet independent movie scene. But as of the 28th (tomorrow), it will be no more.
Stated reason for closing? It got too big, too fast, and DivX (the parent company) felt it was taking away too much of their resources from their main focus, the DivX codex. Of course, no sooner has the announcement been made than the rumors started flying. Everything from a money collapse from lawsuits by the MPAA over copyright infringement (Stage6 had also quickly became a haven for illegal video distribution, despite Stage6's best efforts to thwart this), to a possible buyout from Google. I'm just sad that such a great tool for distributing actually viewable video (unlike YouTube) is slipping away.
This leaves me looking for new places to host High quality versions of my films. Fortunately, I've found 2, Blip.tv and Veoh. For the past couple of days I've been going in and setting up the files for the new systems. So far, I'm actually liking Blip.tv a little better. But there is nothing stopping me from hosting on both systems, along side our own private hosting and the films on YouTube. Heaven knows, my work needs all the exposer it can get.
So, here's our new video channels:
Blip.tv: http://backbreakerstudios.blip.tv/
Veoh: http://www.veoh.com/channels/BackBreakerStudios
Come poke around and tell me what you think. ^.^
