Sorry things have been quite here lately. Mostly it’s due to having our noses to the grindstone.

Baron’s been working hard getting commissions done while getting work together for FC next year. Will post new stuff on that, hopefully, Monday.

As for me, Smudge, Fox Den and I have got ‘the Keeper’s Warrior’ edits in the can and hope to have the proof copy from the printer any day now. ePub version will also be released at the same time so you have your choice of digital or dead trees. Oh, and I was able to include all the art in the digital version too. It was a pain, but I think it will be well worth it in the long run.

To ‘Kill a Dragon’ is still chugging along. I’m in talks with MadeFire, a comic app, to have it posted there.

And last but not least, I’m participating in NaNoWriMo this year. Mostly to try and kick me outta my mental block when it comes to writing. This past few years have not been good to me stress wise and it means that my writing creative juices are not only not flowing, but acting like molasses… in Montana … during winter. And before you ask, ‘To Kill a Dragon’, story-wise, has been sitting on my desk complete for nearly ten years. But with luck, and a little nudge, now that the worst of the stress is off me, I can get things not only going again, but completed.

I’ve decided this year, I’m going to get Dis’ tale done. Right now, it’s under the working title of ‘the Inn of the Cat’, but I am hoping to find something better. After all, the current title, while descriptive, is pretty dang common. Wish me luck!

the Inn of the Cat

DisLoungingAround

Dis was a wanderer, but not by choice. All he wants is a place to call home. And he finally thought he’d found it, in a small inn run by Edio within the bustling trade city of Daleport. Yet, politics, the coming of a new lordship for the city and fear are threaten to, yet again, force him to flee. After all, it’s hard to be a magical being in a city that faces any magic with torches and pitch-forks.

It's been a rough Memorial Day weekend here. This past weekend, we had a family emergency which resulted in Baron and I having to drive to Reno on extremely short notice. We're back in town, but this is going to drag on for a bit, so please bare with us.

I can't say much more except that both of us are feeling emotionally drained right now. Drained and resigned to the situation.

Dragon's Treasure

From Baron:

This was a piece is actually a symbolic portrait of two my friends that I did several years ago. The cat and the dragon are meant to represent the two individuals for whom the commission was done. I was particularly very happy with how the scales on the dragon. Also it is fun to watch and wait for people to spot the joke in the piece.

This piece was another case of learning about how the world works by doing art. The individual who is represented by the dragon pointed out to me after I had finished the picture that masonry usually fails along the mortar lines and in the stonework itself. I later incorporated that knowledge into a later piece and I became just a tiny bit wiser to this world as a whole.

The piece is my typical color pencil, marker, gouache, technical pen. The working surface was cold press illustration board.

So after FC2014, Baron and I sat down and really took a look at things, on where we were art career wise. Our old company, BackBreaker Studios LLC, is long since gone, and at the beginning of last year we were able to pay off the final debts that had incurred. Now, we both agreed it’s time to get back on the horse, a little wiser.

Yes, that’s right, we’re going to be opening a new artistic business and putting our artistic works back on the market for all to enjoy. This site, smudgemarks-engelwerks.com, will slowly, over the next few months, be turned into the main hub on where to find us, our projects, and products. It will take a little bit to get all our business paperwork put together before we can formally open our doors for sales.

We are taking the lessons we learned from BackBreaker and applying them here. For one, we will be forming the new business as an unlimited partnership, not as an LLC. We are also not going to try to reach for the brass ring of Hollywood again. While we *almost* made it work last time, we simply don’t have the resources to try again. Doesn’t mean we’re aren’t willing to talk if someone approaches about one of our projects, just that we won’t be trying to case the industry again. Lastly, we will be focusing more on Baron’s art than my own, getting it out to a broader audience. I, myself, will be taking more of a behind the scenes position, running a lot of the day-to-day stuff as well as product management so he can focus on creating great content.

In the meantime, is there anything you’d like to see us do? Any image from the old BB catalog you’d like to see returned? New product you’d thing would be awesome to have? Ideas for the website? We’re open to suggestion! Feel free to comment below! We’d love to hear from you!

Ebin and May has updated!

Hey guys - sorry for the non-page post today. Right now I am knee deep in website hell, trying to get something up and going under a very tight deadline for work. I actually do have the next 2+ pages penciled - but since this exploded on me I have had no time to ink them.

But thankfully, my sweetie, Baron was able to scan a sketch he did of May for me so you have some lovely guest art to look at.

Here's hoping this wraps up quickly enough for me to get the next page inked and posted on-time. ^.^;
