This just keeps getting more bizarre all the time. They have released footage for the new session of Mysterious Cities of Gold... and it's 3D characters on 2d painted backgrounds.

And it's working! I've used this 3d art technique myself and rather like it. It see it put forth in a full production made me want to sit back and say "See! I told you it would work". I know they probably came up with it purely independently from anything I've done. After all, I am sure I am not the only one. But it still makes my ego swell.

With how sick I've am, it's not like I don't need the ego boost. ^.~

Direct sequel - the planed 2nd season of what was originally suppose to be 3 seasons, to be exact. ^.^

I'm not sure I get what you mean by 3D figures against a 2D background; it all looks to be rendered in 3D? I thought at first that you meant the figures were done in CGI while the backgrounds were painted, but that's clearly not the case. The buildings and scenery are all painted with light and shadow and there's 3D perspective... what am I missing? What's the big difference here?

Nope not all 3D rendered - except for very minor, elements on just a couple of shots - all the backgrounds are Mat Paintings. Sure, there were painted in a computer, but there were not, for the most part, 3D objects.

It's an awesome technique and I'm just really surprised that they went for it, since it's really easy to make it look ... bad.

I'm still confused... and I think I might not have conveyed myself clearly. When I said that the backgrounds looked to be 3D, I wasn't referring to them being done in CGI - I meant that they were rendered in the old fashion way: by hand. With traditional media, like paint. (Although, as you said, this was painted by computer.) They have the appearance of being three dimensional instead of being flat like a two dimensional cartoon. This pretty much looks like any non-CGI animated feature, except for the Anime influence.

In short, I'm still not certain as to what's different or groundbreaking here. I can't see it. What am I supposed to be looking for? What am I missing?
